My husband and I just returned from Sicily last week, where we spent six nights in Taormina. We have been to Sicily six times over the past eight years. Sicily is an extraordinary place which deserves more than one visit, but what has truly beckoned us back again and again is one endlessly enchanting element: Hotel Villa Ducale. And, after six stays there, we feel qualified – and delighted – to report that this small gem
of a hotel just gets better with every visit.
Villa Ducale charmed us from the get-go: the warm welcome, the scale and tone, the jasmine scented air, the cliff-side situation overlooking the Bay of Naxos and Mt. Etna, the sweet, comfortable rooms, the Sicilian art, the delicious breakfast… And over the years, we’ve had the pleasure of experiencing ongoing annual improvements bestowed on the property by the devoted owners, Andrea and Rosaria Quartucci. Among other things, recent years have seen newly renovated bathrooms throughout, dinner service, and the opening of a new section of splendid suites housed in an adjacent building.
Often, when small businesses raise their stakes, something gets lost to progress. Remarkably, for its added polish, not a bit of charm or personality has been lost here. But then again, I suppose you either have heart and soul, or you don’t. Villa Ducale, the Quartuccis and their fine staff have both, in spades.
